Oxford

If social anxiety is making ordinary days in Oxford harder than they should be, there is support, and you can start this week. The main free options are NHS Oxfordshire Talking Therapies, which you can refer yourself to, Oxfordshire Mind's peer groups, and WalkTheTalk, an online social anxiety support group for Oxford and the rest of the UK that meets every Monday at 8pm.

Oxford is an unusually young city. At the 2021 Census, 30% of residents were aged 18-29, and over a quarter of adults were full-time students, the highest share anywhere in England and Wales. That brings a lot of social pressure: freshers' week, tutorials where you're expected to speak up, crowded pubs after lectures. Then term ends, the city's population drops by around a tenth, and the quiet can feel lonelier than the noise.

Looking for social anxiety help in Oxford doesn't mean you need a plan. The anxiety support Oxford offers is mostly free, and none of it expects you to arrive feeling confident.

Confidence is a muscle. WalkTheTalk is about giving you an easy, low-stakes way to train yours. Every Monday at 8pm

HOW IT WORKS

Small steps. Real people. No pressure.

Every Monday at 8pm, you join a small group online. Here’s what happens.

8:00 - 8:10

Check in honestly

Everyone shares briefly how the week's gone. There's no pressure to say more than you want to, especially the first time.

8:10 - 8:40

Share a win and a struggle

This is where the real conversation happens - sharing what's on your mind with people who understand without needing an explanation.

8:40 - 8:50

Leave with one thing to try

Pick one small thing to practice before next Monday - a concrete action. If time, we try social anxiety icebreakers to keep the conversation going.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a social anxiety support group in Oxford?

Yes - WalkTheTalk is a free online social anxiety support group with members from Oxford. It meets every Monday at 8pm by video call, in small breakout rooms of 5-6 people. It's one group open to anyone in the UK rather than an Oxford-only session. Oxfordshire Mind also runs free peer groups in Oxford for wider mental health needs.

How do I get help for social anxiety on the NHS in Oxford?

Refer yourself to NHS Oxfordshire Talking Therapies - you don't need to see your GP first. It's for adults registered with an Oxfordshire GP. Self-refer online at oxfordhealth.nhs.uk/oxon-talking-therapies or call 01865 901 222. After an online referral, an administrator usually gets in touch within two working days to book a phone appointment.

Is WalkTheTalk free?

Yes, WalkTheTalk is completely free. There's no referral, no diagnosis and no waiting list - you just join the call on a Monday at 8pm. We keep it free so cost is never the reason someone stays away, and you can come as often or as rarely as suits you.

What happens at a WalkTheTalk session?

Each session starts with a quick welcome, then you move into a breakout room of 5-6 people. You check in, share how the week's gone, talk through anything coming up, and pick one small thing to try before next Monday. Sharing is always optional - if you'd rather just listen the first time, that's fine.

Is peer support the same as therapy?

No - peer support isn't therapy. WalkTheTalk is run by people with lived experience of social anxiety, not clinicians, so we don't diagnose or treat anything. What it gives you is a regular, low-pressure place to practise being around people. It works well alongside NHS talking therapy or CBT, including while you're on a waiting list.

Will I meet people from Oxford?

Yes - WalkTheTalk already has members from Oxford, alongside people from across the UK. Right now everyone meets in the same online group. We're investing in local connection, including community socials, meetups and eventually city-based groups, but there are no dates set for anything in Oxford yet. Joining now means you're part of it as it grows.

Is there social anxiety support for students in Oxford?

Yes. University of Oxford students can use the free University Counselling Service, which offers one-to-one sessions, workshops and groups. Oxford Brookes has its own free counselling service for enrolled students. Students registered with an Oxfordshire GP can also self-refer to NHS Oxfordshire Talking Therapies, and anyone can join WalkTheTalk online on Mondays at 8pm.
