If you're searching for social anxiety help or a social anxiety support group in London, there's more out there than it feels like at 11pm. You can refer yourself to your borough's free NHS Talking Therapies service, and you can join WalkTheTalk, a free online peer group that meets every Monday, with members from across London.

London isn't an easy place to feel small in. Around 9.1 million people live here, according to Trust for London, and more than one in five people in Inner London are aged 25 to 34. It can look like everyone your age is networking, dating and booking up their weekends, while you're redrafting a reply to the team group chat.

TfL counted about 4.05 million Tube trips on one Thursday in November 2023 - packed carriages, dodging eye contact, sure everyone saw you fumble at the barrier. Add after-work drinks you can't easily skip and Saturday nights that run on the Night Tube, and it's no wonder plenty of people quietly start saying no.

None of that means something's wrong with you. It's what social anxiety can look like in a city that rarely slows down, and anxiety support in London can start small.

Confidence is a muscle. WalkTheTalk is about giving you an easy, low-stakes way to train yours. Every Monday at 8pm

HOW IT WORKS

Small steps. Real people. No pressure.

Every Monday at 8pm, you join a small group online. Here’s what happens.

8:00 - 8:10

Check in honestly

Everyone shares briefly how the week's gone. There's no pressure to say more than you want to, especially the first time.

8:10 - 8:40

Share a win and a struggle

This is where the real conversation happens - sharing what's on your mind with people who understand without needing an explanation.

8:40 - 8:50

Leave with one thing to try

Pick one small thing to practice before next Monday - a concrete action. If time, we try social anxiety icebreakers to keep the conversation going.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find a social anxiety group in London?

WalkTheTalk is a free online social anxiety group with members across London. It meets every Monday at 8pm by video call, and you'll be placed in a small breakout room of 5-6 people. It's one UK-wide group rather than a London-only one, so you'll meet people from all over the country - some of them just a few Tube stops away.

Can I self-refer for CBT in London?

Yes. Every London borough has its own NHS Talking Therapies service, and all of them accept self-referrals for CBT, including for social anxiety. CNWL Talking Therapies, for example, covers Brent, Harrow, Hillingdon, Kensington and Chelsea, and Westminster. Use the NHS finder at https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/mental-health-services/find-nhs-talking-therapies-for-anxiety-and-depression/ - enter your GP surgery and it'll point you to the right service.

How much does social anxiety peer support cost?

WalkTheTalk's peer support costs nothing. There's no referral, no diagnosis needed and no waiting list - you sign up and join the next Monday session. Some other organisations charge for groups or membership, so it's worth checking before you commit to one, but coming along to ours is completely free, whether it's your first week or your fiftieth.

What is an online social anxiety group actually like?

Calmer and more ordinary than most people expect. You start with a quick check-in, then move into a breakout room of 5-6 people to talk about your week and anything coming up that feels daunting. Most people leave with one small thing to try before next time. Sharing is optional - lots of people just listen for the first few weeks.

Can peer support help with social anxiety?

Yes, it can. Talking with people who get it takes some of the shame out of social anxiety, and a small group is a low-stakes place to practise the thing that feels hardest. Peer support isn't therapy, though. It works well alongside NHS Talking Therapies or CBT, or while you're waiting for them, rather than instead of them.

Are there in-person social anxiety events in London?

Not from WalkTheTalk yet - we don't run in-person events in London at the moment. What we do have is London members in our online Monday group right now. We're investing in local connection, starting with community socials and meetups and eventually city-based groups, but we won't promise dates until they're actually happening.

How can I cope with social anxiety at work in London?

Start small, and go easy on yourself. Pick one low-pressure moment to practise, like saying one thing in the Monday stand-up or staying ten minutes at after-work drinks before heading for the Tube. Afterwards, notice what actually happened compared with what you feared. Some London NHS Talking Therapies services also offer employment advice, so it's worth asking yours.
