Glasgow

If you're living with social anxiety in Glasgow, there are free options you can use this week. You can refer yourself to an NHS Primary Care Mental Health Team, walk into SAMH's Nook in the Merchant City with no appointment, or join WalkTheTalk, a free online social anxiety support group with Glasgow members, every Monday night. None of these need a GP referral.

Glasgow is regularly voted one of the friendliest cities in the world, which can make social anxiety feel lonelier. When everyone seems to chat easily, the person rehearsing their order three times over feels like the odd one out. The city hosts around 130 music events a week, so plenty of plans start with "you coming to the gig?" - and plenty of anxious nights end before they start. Even getting there can mean the Subway's single loop of 15 stations, standing close to strangers at rush hour.

That doesn't mean something is wrong with you. Social anxiety is a state you're in, not who you are, and it can shift. If you're looking for social anxiety help or wider anxiety support in Glasgow, the resources below start small.

Confidence is a muscle. WalkTheTalk is about giving you an easy, low-stakes way to train yours. Every Monday at 8pm

HOW IT WORKS

Small steps. Real people. No pressure.

Every Monday at 8pm, you join a small group online. Here’s what happens.

8:00 - 8:10

Check in honestly

Everyone shares briefly how the week's gone. There's no pressure to say more than you want to, especially the first time.

8:10 - 8:40

Share a win and a struggle

This is where the real conversation happens - sharing what's on your mind with people who understand without needing an explanation.

8:40 - 8:50

Leave with one thing to try

Pick one small thing to practice before next Monday - a concrete action. If time, we try social anxiety icebreakers to keep the conversation going.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find a social anxiety group in Glasgow?

WalkTheTalk runs a free online social anxiety support group every Monday at 8pm, and people from Glasgow already join it. It's one UK-wide group on video call, with small breakout rooms of 5-6. If you'd like something face to face too, GAMH runs support groups for adults living in Glasgow, and SAMH's Nook in the Merchant City is open for walk-ins.

Can I self-refer for CBT in Glasgow?

Yes. You can refer yourself to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde's Primary Care Mental Health Teams, which offer psychological therapies that can include CBT for anxiety and phobias. In Glasgow, call North West on 0141 232 9270, South on 0141 232 2555, or North East through the switchboard on 0141 531 9000. Full details: https://www.nhsggc.scot/your-health/heads-up-mental-health-support/services-and-support/mental-health-services/

How much does social anxiety peer support cost?

WalkTheTalk is completely free. There's no membership fee, no referral, no diagnosis and no waiting list - you sign up and join on a Monday at 8pm. Some organisations charge for parts of their support, so check before you commit, but peer support doesn't have to cost you anything to be worth your time.

What is an online social anxiety group actually like?

It's smaller and calmer than most people expect. At WalkTheTalk, you start on one video call, then move into a breakout room of 5-6 people for a check-in, sharing wins and struggles, and talking through something coming up. You'll usually leave with one small thing to try that week. You don't have to speak - listening is a perfectly good first step.

Can peer support help with social anxiety?

Yes, it can - especially alongside other treatment. Peer support isn't therapy, and the people in the room aren't clinicians. What it offers is regular, low-pressure practice at being around others, with people who understand because they've been there. It sits well alongside NHS therapy or CBT, and it can help you keep going when progress from earlier therapy has started to fade.

Are there in-person social anxiety events in Glasgow?

Not from WalkTheTalk yet. Our group runs online, and Glasgow members join every Monday at 8pm. We're investing in local connection - community socials, meetups and eventually city-based groups - but we won't promise dates until they're real. In the meantime, GAMH runs in-person groups for adults and young people in Glasgow, and SAMH's Nook in the Merchant City welcomes walk-ins.

What can I do while I wait for NHS therapy in Glasgow?

Quite a lot, and small steps count. Join a free WalkTheTalk session on a Monday, drop into SAMH's Nook in the Merchant City, or call Anxiety UK's 24/7 infoline on 03444 775 774. GAMH also runs a free, confidential phoneline for when you feel distressed. If you're ever in crisis, call NHS 24 on 111 or Samaritans on 116 123.
