Edinburgh

If you're looking for a social anxiety support group in Edinburgh, you have more options than it might feel like at 11pm. Edinburgh's Thrive Welcome Teams run NHS-linked drop-ins across the city where you can talk to a mental health practitioner without a GP referral. For peer support, WalkTheTalk runs a free online group every Monday at 8pm, and people from Edinburgh already join it from home.

Edinburgh can be a tricky city for social anxiety. Every August the Fringe takes over, and pubs, churches and back rooms become venues. If crowds and small talk make your chest tighten, that month can feel like the whole city expects you to be out being sociable. The rest of the year has its own pressures: a packed tram along Princes Street, after-work drinks you rehearse your way out of, a flatmate who wants you to come to a show.

None of that means something's wrong with you. Social anxiety is real, it's common, and it can shift with the right support. Below you'll find social anxiety help and wider anxiety support in Edinburgh, from the NHS and local charities, plus how our Monday group works.

Confidence is a muscle. WalkTheTalk is about giving you an easy, low-stakes way to train yours. Every Monday at 8pm

HOW IT WORKS

Small steps. Real people. No pressure.

Every Monday at 8pm, you join a small group online. Here’s what happens.

8:00 - 8:10

Check in honestly

Everyone shares briefly how the week's gone. There's no pressure to say more than you want to, especially the first time.

8:10 - 8:40

Share a win and a struggle

This is where the real conversation happens - sharing what's on your mind with people who understand without needing an explanation.

8:40 - 8:50

Leave with one thing to try

Pick one small thing to practice before next Monday - a concrete action. If time, we try social anxiety icebreakers to keep the conversation going.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a social anxiety support group in Edinburgh?

Yes. WalkTheTalk runs a free online social anxiety peer support group every Monday at 8pm, and people from Edinburgh already join from home. It's one UK-wide group rather than a city-only session, so you'll meet people from all over. In person, Health in Mind runs anxiety peer support groups, and iThrive Edinburgh lists other local options.

How do I get help for social anxiety on the NHS in Edinburgh?

Go to a Thrive Welcome Team drop-in. These teams are run by the Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership with NHS Lothian, and you don't need a referral to attend. They see adults registered with an Edinburgh GP. A practitioner will talk through what's going on and can connect you with counselling, groups or specialist support. Drop-in times are on iThrive Edinburgh: https://ithriveedinburgh.org.uk/thrive-welcome-teams/

Is WalkTheTalk free?

Yes, WalkTheTalk is free. There's no referral, no diagnosis and no waiting list, so you don't need anything from your GP before you come. Wherever you are, in Edinburgh or elsewhere in the UK, you can join the next Monday session at 8pm. It's free social anxiety support online, run by people who know how this feels from the inside.

What happens at a WalkTheTalk session?

A WalkTheTalk session starts with a quick check-in, then you join a breakout room of 5-6 people. You can share a win or a struggle, talk through something coming up, and have a go at a gentle icebreaker. You'll leave with one small thing to try before next week. Sharing is optional, and listening is a perfectly good way to start.

Is peer support the same as therapy?

No. Peer support isn't therapy, and the people running WalkTheTalk aren't clinicians. It's people living with social anxiety practising together and comparing notes. It sits well alongside NHS therapy or CBT, whether you're waiting for it, partway through, or finished and feeling the benefits wear off. For clinical help in Edinburgh, a Thrive Welcome Team or your GP is the place to start.

Will I meet people from Edinburgh?

You might. WalkTheTalk already has members in Edinburgh, though for now everyone meets in the same UK-wide online group. Over time we're investing in local connection, starting with community socials and meetups and, eventually, city-based peer groups. We can't give dates yet. Joining now means you're already part of the group when anything starts in Edinburgh.
