Cardiff

If social anxiety is making Cardiff feel smaller than it should, you're not on your own, and there's anxiety support in Cardiff you can start this week. WalkTheTalk runs a free online social anxiety support group with Cardiff members every Monday at 8pm. NHS Wales also offers a self-referral online CBT course for social anxiety, and local charities such as Cardiff Mind and 4Winds offer one-to-one and open-access support.

Cardiff can be a hard place to feel anxious around people. It's a capital city with three universities - Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University and the University of South Wales - plus the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, so for a lot of people life runs on freshers' socials, seminar discussions and house shares where everyone seems to know each other already. Match days at the Principality Stadium fill the city centre. If you commute in from elsewhere in the Cardiff Capital Region, the day can start on a crowded train and end with after-work drinks you've been dreading since lunch.

None of that means something is wrong with you. Social anxiety is real, and it's a state you're in right now, not who you are. Looking for social anxiety help in Cardiff is already a step.

Confidence is a muscle. WalkTheTalk is about giving you an easy, low-stakes way to train yours. Every Monday at 8pm

HOW IT WORKS

Small steps. Real people. No pressure.

Every Monday at 8pm, you join a small group online. Here’s what happens.

8:00 - 8:10

Check in honestly

Everyone shares briefly how the week's gone. There's no pressure to say more than you want to, especially the first time.

8:10 - 8:40

Share a win and a struggle

This is where the real conversation happens - sharing what's on your mind with people who understand without needing an explanation.

8:40 - 8:50

Leave with one thing to try

Pick one small thing to practice before next Monday - a concrete action. If time, we try social anxiety icebreakers to keep the conversation going.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there social anxiety meetups in Cardiff?

Not in person yet. WalkTheTalk runs a free online social anxiety peer support group every Monday at 8pm, and people from Cardiff join it alongside members from across the UK. It's one UK-wide group rather than a Cardiff-only session, held by video call in small breakout rooms of 5-6 people, so you can join from your own sofa.

Who do I contact for NHS talking therapies in Cardiff?

Start with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. You can refer yourself straight to SilverCloud, NHS Wales' free online CBT, which includes a Space from Social Anxiety programme: https://cavuhb.nhs.wales/our-services/mental-health/silvercloud/. For other support, book a GP appointment. Every GP practice in Cardiff has a mental health practitioner who can refer you on to other services.

Do I need a referral or diagnosis to join a peer support group?

No. You don't need a referral, a diagnosis or a GP letter to join WalkTheTalk, and there's no waiting list. It's free. You sign up, get the video link and come along on a Monday at 8pm. If you think you might be living with social anxiety, that's reason enough to try a session.

Do I have to speak in a peer support session?

No, sharing is always optional. A session starts with a short check-in, then you move into a breakout room of 5-6 people to talk through wins, struggles and anything coming up that week. You can listen the whole time if that feels right. Speaking often gets easier once the faces feel familiar, but there's no rush.

Can I join a peer support group while I'm on an NHS waiting list?

Yes, and it can be a good use of that time. WalkTheTalk is peer support, not therapy, so it doesn't replace CBT or any NHS treatment - it sits alongside it. You can use Monday sessions to practise small steps, talk through what's coming up, and spend an hour with people who understand while you wait.

Is WalkTheTalk planning local groups in Cardiff?

That's the plan, though we're not promising dates yet. Right now, Cardiff members join the same online Monday group as everyone else. Over time WalkTheTalk is investing in local connection: community socials, meetups and eventually city-based peer groups. If you join now, you'll be among the first to hear when something starts near you.

Is there social anxiety support for young adults in Cardiff?

Yes. If you're 16 or over, NHS Wales' SilverCloud has a self-referral Space from Social Anxiety programme, plus a separate anxiety course for 16-17-year-olds. Cardiff Mind's services are for adults aged 18 and over. If you're studying in Cardiff, your university's wellbeing service is worth a look too. WalkTheTalk's Monday group is free and open to anyone in the UK.
